Amritsar Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

The District Court in Amritsar has a history spanning over 150 years. In the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, there was no formal judicial system. decisions were made by chieftains without written laws. The British annexation of Punjab in 1849 led to the establishment of the Sadar Court of Judicature. Over time, the judicial system evolved, with various Acts shaping its structure and function.

By 1856, civil courts began operating in Amritsar, and by 1862, honorary native magistrates were appointed for petty criminal cases. The Punjab Courts Act of 1865 and subsequent amendments delineated the hierarchy of civil courts, from Tehsildar Courts to the Chief Court. The Punjab Courts Act of 1884 further refined the judicial system, introducing divisional courts and modifying the powers of the Chief Court.

The 20th century saw additional reforms, including the establishment of Small Cause Courts and amendments to the Punjab Courts Act in 1914 and 1918. Notable figures in the court’s history include Mr. H.V. Riddell and Mr. H.S. Cott Smith. Since the separation of executive and judiciary in 1964, the District and Sessions Judge has overseen both civil and criminal justice in the district, with 35 courts currently operating in the Sessions Division.
